Horse Camp

For Ages 7 through 11 Years Old

We recommend starting with a horse camp to get the best introduction to equine education. Campers not only learn the fundamentals of safe riding skills, but also increase their self confidence as they learn about the physical care of the horse, his attitudes and different learning processes. Each camp session has six campers with one adult instructor and the assistance of camp graduates. Camp is for riders of all levels and special attention will be given to each individual rider and that rider's level of experience. Instructors and guests will give talks and demonstrations on horse-related subjects such as feed, shoeing, training methods, veterinary care, horse history, and equine art. Camp is held in both the lesson barn and in the indoor arena.

Daily Schedule

Camp begins with grooming and saddling, under close supervision and encouragement from the instructors. Then each small group rides in a lesson in the arena. Each camper has another individual lesson on the lunge line. On the lunge, the student can enjoy learning riding skills while the horse is under the control of the instructor. After riding, the campers untack and groom their horses while learning and practicing essential barn chores.

What to Wear
Equestrian safety helmets are mandatory for all campers while on horseback. English or western riding boots, or heavy shoes with 1/2" to 1" heel are also required. Britches make riding more comfortable but are optional. Always bring a warm jacket because of fog and sudden weather changes.

Helmets and riding clothes can be purchased locally at: Vista Madera Tack Shop in Oakland (510) 531-1989; Orinda Village Horse Shop (925) 254-1421; Clayton Saddlery (925) 672-6100.

Horse Drawing Camp
For kids who love to draw horses! Debby Young will assist campers in developing their drawing skills through learning horse anatomy and drawing from live horse models.  Art materials will be provided.
